A nationwide debate has erupted in regards to the power of online petitioning following the rector of Istanbul Technical University, Mehmet Karaca's announcement that a new "landmark mosque" is to be built on campus. The petition for the new mosque gained just shy of 200,000 signatures and has since sparked a second petition of 20,000 ITÜ students calling for the creation of a Buddhist temple too. Following these recent events, now over five thousand students of Dokuz Eylül University in the western province of Izmir, Turkey have signed a petition to erect a temple on their campus. However their request is not to cater for followers of Islam or Buddhism, but in fact, Jediism.
